Picture yourself walking along a cobblestone street in the heart of Italy. The musical tune of the language fills your ears, bicycles pedaled by businessmen in suits pass by, flowerpots grace every balcony. You walk past a charming little cafe. The intoxicating aroma of freshly-baked waffles wafts through the door. Sitting just outside the store on a worn, wooden bench are two dignified old ladies enjoying their scoops.
This is my home. When I moved to Johannesburg, South Africa, I had a dream of bringing along a real taste of Italy. The idea of opening an authentic Italian gelateria took root in my mind, and eventually I set about turning my dream into actuality.
I had absolutely zero business experience, and the term ‘starting from scratch’ was an understatement. According to the rules of nature and all the business ‘experts’, there was no chance of success. But Hashem, the best business partner anyone could ask for, made the impossible a reality.
I traveled to Milan to learn the tricks of the trade, and our ingredients are the finest Italy has to offer. The main elements, however, the ones that truly matter, are passion, love, warmth, and joy. This is the recipe for every Italian success.
Gelato means ice cream in Italian. When Italians want to emphasize something, they add issimo to the end of the word, like bellissimo (very beautiful) and buonissimo (very good). That is how the name Gelatissimo came to be.
When you walk into Gelatissimo, it’s not only about having gelato – it’s a whole experience. You suddenly feel as though you are magically transported to a small town in Italy. The feelings of comfort, warmth, and passion, which are characteristic of Italy, encompass you. Delicious aromas fill the air. You are living the Italian experience. You are home. Sei a casa!
